So LA get the result their positivity just about deserved, though they may be made to rue some of their wastefulness in front of goal when the second leg comes round. Robbie Keane had a couple of chances at least that he’d have buried on anther day, and despite Sean Franklin’s emphatic shot giving LA the lead, the longer the game went on, the more RSL looked like taking something from the first 90 minutes.
They didn’t in the end though Salt Lake looked a lot better when not playing with two deep midfielders and letting Beckerman clean up in front of defense on his own as he more usually does in their normal diamond formation. The introduction of Velasquez took the game back to LA, and they looked less than confident at times when not being permitted to work their way through and around the RSL defense (where Chris Schuler was immense). Food for thought for Kreis in the second leg, even as he has to think about the continued threat of Keane and Donovan.
